Should I take a break from social media?
As a generation, we're obsessed with social media. We're constantly bombarded with messages and comparison traps. I'm sure we can all agree that social media can be quite exhausting. But what about Christian Twitter? Christian Instagram and encouraging YouTube videos? Are these exceptions? Is there such a thing as too much of a good thing? Is it necessary to ask ourselves, should I take a break from social media?
Can we make exceptions for Christian social media?
"Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life." (John 4:13-14 NIV)
Retweeting "God is love" and having your timeline filled with Christian influencers and pastors is not a substitute for actual devotion and faith. Also, I don't think this is quite the living water that Jesus was referring to.
The reason we find ourselves still thirsty after hours and hours of scrolling is because we haven't taken the time to switch our phones off and unplug from the thousands of voices telling us what to think.
Turn down the noise
Social media is like plugging yourself into an echo chamber of voices every morning. How can we ever hear ourselves think or furthermore, how can we even recognise the nudges of the Holy Spirit?
Should I take a social media break? Well, Jesus saw the importance of solitude.
"In the early morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house, and went away to a secluded place, and was praying there." (Mark 1:35 NIV)
Some of our most powerful revelations come from moments of complete isolation. A social media fast or detox might be exactly what you need today, this week or maybe this month to grow in faith and gain some clarity. Cutting out the extra noise from social media can help you focus on the one voice that truly matters.
Have you ever taken a social media break? How has it helped you spiritually?

Since my teenage years, writing has been my passion and now I feel God is calling me to use my gift to connect with other women as we grow together in Christ. You'll typically find me writing articles, poetry, and listening to worship music. My dream is to graduate and travel between my Church locations devoting myself to God and my writing.
