Love God First
The bible tells us the greatest commandment in the bible is to love God with all our hearts, minds and souls (Matt 22:37) and to seek Him first (Matt 6:33). But oftentimes we put our status, relationships and careers at the heart of our lives, end up disappointed and start to question ourselves… and God.
If we love God first, we will love others best
A few years ago, I was in a relationship and I remember there were occasions where I didn't seek God first.
Whilst this doesn’t seem harmful, as Christians, we have to understand that anything that we love more than God, becomes our idol.
Loving God first allows Him to lead us and transform us from the inside out. When we are faced with situations where we find it hard to love whether that is because of past hurts, disbelief, rejection, we can choose to root ourselves in God’s love and He will strengthen us to get through it. Through His love, we can learn to love others better.
If we love God, we will obey his commands
One of my favourite, yet challenging quotes is:
“Obedience to God cannot be based on what I feel, which changes. It must be based on who he is, which does not.”
God has to be put first, before everything, even my emotions. If I pursued everything based on my feelings, my life would be a complete mess.
I’m grateful that we have a God who doesn’t call us to love him first because of selfish reasons but because by loving him first will help us love others and ourselves better.
The greatest love ever shown was when God sent his son down to earth to die for us. This love is not the love that we hear about often, the world consumes us with its own ideology. Gods love for us is more than we can imagine, he sees our faults, our mistakes and loves us anyway. God loved us first so that we could love him ( 1 John 4:19). We can rely on the love God has for us, because he is love and whoever lives in love lives in God (1 John 4 :16).
