How can I give God my heart?

With the Christmas season upon us, we naturally find ourselves in the exciting process of finding the perfect gifts for our loved ones. Just as we can be intentional in giving thoughtful gifts to those we love, we can be intentional in what we give to the Lord. The most precious things we could ever offer to our Heavenly Father is our heart. A verse from the book of Samuel gives us an important reminder.

“For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.” 1 Samuel 16:7

As we walk with God, He’s looking at and seeking after our heart — He cares more about our internal condition than any “perfect” image we could ever present on the outside. So how can we give God our hearts?

Give God your time

What gets the majority of your attention? We are made purposefully in Gods image (Genesis 1:27), so we are designed to know Him and be filled by Him. There’s nothing else on this earth that can be your true fulfilment; creation can’t fulfil you the way the Creator — who knows the depths of who you are — can. As your Heavenly Father, God desires to spend time with you and takes pleasure in you; you’re His delight! Spend time with Him in prayer and in the Word, serve Him wherever you are, and enjoy doing life with Him.

“But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you” (Matthew 6:33).

Give God your trust

Based on who God is, you can give Him your trust completely, knowing you’re in good hands. Trusting the Lord “with all your heart” is a continual act of surrender. Psalm 33:20 says that the Lord is our “help” and “shield.” Giving Him your heart means trusting Him with every aspect of your life. He’s patient and never forces Himself but allows us to choose to trust Him in every circumstance. He intends to help and protect you, while perfecting you to make you look more like Christ.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths(Proverbs 3:5-6).

Give God your hope

Giving God your heart points to an important truth: He is your hope. He sent His Son Jesus Christ to do what no man could do — die for our sins and be raised from the dead, defeating sin and death. Because of His sacrifice for us, when we repent of our sins and accept Jesus Christ as our Saviour, we step into a new life: a right relationship with God and eternal life in heaven. On this earth, you have access to a personal God, His faithful character, and everything He promises to those who follow Him — His joy (Romans 15:13), His strength (Isaiah 12:2), His wisdom (Proverbs 2:6), His peace (John 14:27), and so much more. Fully giving Him your heart is allowing Him to be your ultimate hope, satisfaction, provider, and living in the reality of what He’s done for you and continues to do.

“Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful” (Hebrews 10:23).

In this season where we focus on giving, let us remember the One who gave His all for us and prioritise giving Him our lives to show our gratitude.
