Book recommendations with Gloria Sade
As the days of social isolation stretch ahead of us, we teamed up with a couple of our favourite avid readers for their book recommendations.
Gloria Sade; twin mum, blogger and storyteller, joins us in part 1 as she shares her top 4 book recommendations.
Fervent, Priscilla Shirer
I love this book. I’m a bit apprehensive about prayer books for women as I sometimes feel there’s an emphasis placed on marriage and kids when that might not be what is always on the mind of every woman. This book surprised me in so many ways, yes there were parts that highlighted praying over marriage and kids but there were specific prayers about many other aspects of life. The book also encourages writing prayers down which helps you think about areas in your life that weigh you down or than you want to be improved. It definitely pushed me to reflect on life but in a strategic and spiritual way.
The Gifts of Imperfection, Brene Brown
This book helped me to embrace who I am as a person, with all my imperfections and short comings. There were so many burdens that I felt were lifted off of my shoulders by just reading it, I didn’t realise how many expectations I had placed on myself just to appear perfect or to be seen in a certain way. I absolutely love the author as well, she is a psychologist and researcher so she backs up all her theories with results from her studies and real life interactions with people. Great book.
The Year of Yes, Shonda Rhimes
If you’re looking for a light, easy and funny read then this is the book for you while you’re home! Shonda Rhimes is the mastermind behind some of the best TV shows- Scandal, How To Get Away With Murder and Greys Anatomy. Reading this book just feels like she’s speaking to you and you’re literally having a conversation. Even with its light and easy feel, she drops many gems that encourage you to move in the direction of your ‘dreams’ and be open to opportunities that come your way. I’ll definitely be re-reading this at some point this year!
Homegoing, Yaa Gyasi
Once I started reading this book, I couldn’t put it down. Absolutely amazing storytelling, I got so involved in the characters’ lives and stories, imagined the places that were described and truly felt connected to each character in one way or another. If you love fiction and are somewhat interested in African stories, you’ll love this book.
My words of encouragement for women in quarantine: Make good use of your time. Not to focus on just one thing, but so many aspects of who you are. Time to get to know yourself more, to get deeper with God, to grow in knowledge in certain areas, to do what you love and most importantly to rest your body and your mind.
