Travel: Sorrento & Other Italian Islands

In March last year, me and my bestie traveled to Sorrento, a coastal town in Italy, for a cheeky spring break. I'm a bit of a memory hoarder so of course the trip included a lot of photo and video taking, so here's a little look into what we got up to.

Sorrento

Situated on the Bay of Naples, Sorrento is one of the most scenic places I’ve ever visited. It’s ideally located a quick ferry ride away from many other popular tourist destinations including Amalfi, Positano, and Capri which we also visited.

The convenience of Sorrento’s location and its slightly less expensive accommodation were what convinced us to chose it as our home-base. We spent maximum of two days and most evenings of our trip exploring Sorrento and it was definitely more than enough time. As scenic as the town is, there isn’t actually a lot to do there. The rest of the days we spent in other small towns.

What to do in Sorrento 

We did a lot of excursions during this holiday, and because it was off-season we were able to do a lot of the premium excursions at off-season prices. If we had gone on this trip in Summer, it definitely would’ve cost double the price. We didn’t pre-book anything but had a rough plan of what we wanted to do and where wanted to see. We went to the tourist information center and booked everything the first day we got there.

Check out Piazza Tasso for shopping and restaurants that have an authentic Italian vibe. For scenic views, go to the Marina Grande for views of Mount Vesuvius, the Piazza Della Vittoria for beautiful cliffside views and Piazza Sant’Antonino for a glimpse of everyday Sorrento.

Positano

It took us about 40 minutes to reach Positano on the tour bus. Positano is unreal. We arrived on the bus and were dropped off at the top of a cliff where we had amazing views of the Positano neighbourhoods and beaches. There’s not really much to do in Positano, but there are quite a few shops and boutiques where you can grab souvenirs at a reasonable price.

Capri and Amalfi Coast

We traveled by private boat (thank God for off-season prices!) to get to Capri and Amalfi and this was undoubtedly my favourite day of the entire trip.

At Capri, we visited a few of the famous churches; Chiesa di San Michele which has elaborate 1700s tile flooring and Chiesa di San Costanzo which was a small, but beautiful church.

At Amalfi, we enjoyed a nice (and reasonably priced) lunch by the seaside at Blu Sirena. We also viewed the Amalfi Cathedral which was hands down the most beautiful church we saw during our trip.

Italy is a foodies' dream

As a foodie, Italy is always a dream.

Food finds: Try out the local dessert Lemon Delight (Delizia al Limone), sponge lemon cake filled and topped with a smooth lemon custard.

We didn’t get to enjoy any of the beaches whilst on our trip as the weather wasn’t warm enough to soak up some Vitamin D, but the beaches looked incredible so it goes without saying that if you’re going during the summer months, head straight there!

But honestly, regardless of what time of year it is, if you’ve got the opportunity to go then I would definitely recommend it. The Amalfi Coast is gorgeous no matter what season it is - please beware that during winter months some of the excursions aren’t available.
