God can be enjoyed

I'm not surprised that people think you become boring when you become a Christian. I can remember a time when I thought the exact same thing.

From the outside looking in, I thought Christianity looked like any other  religion, full of rules and regulations & that by being a Christian, I would have to give up my ‘best life’ and to stop doing what I wanted to do. Which for obvious reasons, wasn’t appealing.

& Surely enough, I gave my life to God and one month later, I found myself in the club, drunk, probably high and definitely unapologetic. The problem wasn’t that I didn’t want to change, I just still desired the things I'd previously desired and found joy in what I’d known before, and admittedly, found things to do with God...boring.

What Boredom Tells Us

Boredom is the condition of finding something or someone uninteresting. It’s an interest problem and an expression of our hunger for something engaging.

There is no such thing on earth as an uninteresting subject; the only thing that can exist is an uninterested person.

G.K. Chesterton

So Gods not boring, we’re just naturally...uninterested. Before salvation, we’re ruled and controlled by our natural mind and desires, which are both contrary to God's desires.

“But a natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them because they are spiritually appraised.” 1st Corinthians 2:14

It takes God's word to change our hearts, minds and desires until we become transformed. (Romans 12:2)

Joy changes everything

It wasn’t until I started finding joy in God that I actually started to see a change in my life. It got to a point where suddenly going out wasn’t fun, but reading my bible was. Trust me, I was as shocked as you are reading this.

I remember listening to a Coach Josh sermon where he described how our diet is made up of everything we consume; TV shows, books, music, basically, the things we let into our lives every day. When we suddenly try to cut out what we’re accustomed to and exchange it for reading our bible, praying, listening to sermons, it’s like going from eating pizza, burgers, junk food 24/7 to now having broccoli, cauliflower, peas and sugar-free drinks. It's not an easy transition. But it’s good for us. There are benefits in the long run, where junk food offers none.

God extends to us this great invite:

“Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and he who has no money, come, buy and eat!... Listen diligently to me, and eat what is good, and delight yourselves in rich food.” (Isaiah 55:1–2)

God wants us to delight in Him.

He’s not trying to rob our joy, instead, he wants us to find it in Him.

He urges us to love him with our hearts, souls, and our minds. Luke 10:27.  He is an infinite supply of interesting. His word is not only truth but also mentally stimulating, alive and active. I mean, he’s actually God.

I can look back at my ‘old life’ and wholeheartedly say, it does not compare to the joy I have found and experienced in Christ.

Whether you’re an unbeliever on the outside looking in or a Christian struggling with finding God boring, listen carefully to your boredom. It’s a hunger for the joy that only God can completely satisfy. Don’t just feed it with junk food, but do the work. Read your bible, pray. Let your boredom lead you to the true source of joy.
